Xylophone Timeline
2000 B.C- The first xylophone is believed to have originated in China, some temple carvings confirm this! The pictures were of hanging wood instruments resembling a harmonica with 16 wooden bars.
9th to the 14th century- The xylophone we know first appeared in eastern Asia in the 9th century and later spread to Africa by the 14th century.
16th century (1511)- Xylophone was first brought to Europe. Was refereed to as "wooden percussion" or "straw fiddle". It was first listed by Praetorius in his catalogue of musical instruments.
April 7,1866- The instrument was officially named xylophone.
19th century- The xylophone became very popular because of the Russian composer Michael Josef Gusikov who played it on his tours.
1874- Saint-Saens first used the xylophone in the modern orchestra in the Danse macabre movement.
1910-1940- Is known as the Golden age with famous xylophonists like George Cary, George Hamilton Green and Harry Breuer.
